Fashion has taken a role in being a silent yet loud voice in how we choose to express ourselves. It would be remiss to talk about feminism and fashion without acknowledging Donna Karan - the founder of the modern women's wardrobe.
Donna Karan created what is known as the 7 Essentials - a seven-piece wardrobe - that would take a woman from day to night looking great. It is said best in the words of the fashion mogul herself,
"When Donna Karan started, I felt there was a really enormous need for women to be addressed as women. Because they were either wearing men's clothes — suits and ties and shirts, kind of buttoned up — or they were the ladies who lunched, and kind of wearing cocktail dresses. So who was really expressing the working woman? She was just not being addressed."
Enter Streetwear.
Now we are in an era where comfortable is the new professional. Thanks to the rise of tech, entrepreneurship, and the original hip-hop head coming of age -- streetwear is now a legit fashion staple.
Yet, the nuances of streetwear aren't always obvious for the feminine girl, who's not trying to get lost in oversized hoodies or hide her face behind a baseball cap.
So how does the modern day women rock streetwear? We will attempt to explain this in seven sections - similar to Donna Karan's seven essentials but for streetwear.
But first…

What is Streetwear
Streetwear, also known as hip-hop or urban fashion, is the clothing popularized by hip-hop culture. It is traditionally most noticeable by noticeable primarily by t-shirts, sweatshirts, and hoodies with large graphic prints, large logos, tracksuits, crop tops, bodysuits and leggings for women, and an array of accessories including baseball caps, chains donned with a ‘Jesus Piece’, large hoop earrings, bandanas, and sneakers.
Popularized by one of the earliest rap groups, Adidas, was one of the foremost street brands for some time, while brands such as Dapper Dan straight out of Harlem were well-kept secrets until recently.
Developing a women’s streetwear capsule collection
Streetwear can be a risky fashion choice, especially when integrated into daily life (ie beyond errands and gym time) and even more so for those more conservative in nature.
Working the essentials into your wardrobe is a foray into a culture that is unapologetic in nature. Hip-hop comes from a time and a place where buildings were on fire (literally), the government (federal and local) at best ignored, at worse, strategized against the residents and yet art, creativity, and passion prevailed first as a form of resistance into an international and intergenerational culture.
The Founders of hip-hop both men and women created something that everyone said it could never be. They defied the odds, transformed popular culture, and formed a multi-billion dollar industry.
Within streetwear and its components, there is more than meets the eye. Developing a women’s streetwear collection provides the space for you to connect with that which is within you - more than meets the eye, something you may have hidden or may not have yet to be seen - to be revealed.
The following chapters will take a look at each piece and address the the point:
- What are the must haves in relation to each piece?
- What is the hidden communication(s) of each piece?
- How do you make it your own?
